Water: a priceless commodity

22 March is World Water Day. This day was created to raise awareness of the need to make the most of water resources and highlight their importance in poverty reduction, economic growth and environmental sustainability.

As the United Nations (UN) points out, although all social and economic activities depend to a large extent on the supply and quality of freshwater, 2.2 billion people live without access to safe drinking water (The Importance of Water). This is why water and universal access to it also feature on the Agenda 2030 and are embodied in Sustainable Development Goal 6: “Access to water and sanitation for all” (Sustainable Development Goals: Water).

The COVID-19 crisis has underscored the importance of clean water and access to sanitation as essential hygiene measures in the fight against the virus. A gesture as simple as hand washing is one of the best ways to curb the spread of the virus, but it is not available to everyone on the planet.

That is why the theme of this year’s World Water Day is “Valuing water”. Population growth and activities such as industry and agriculture demand increasing amounts of water. Yet climate change has led to an increase in droughts, pollution and more extreme weather events.

Tradecorp’s commitment to sustainable water use

Tradecorp is committed to environmental protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. Our Environmental Management System is ISO 14001:2004 certified and we have been a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact since 2012.

Our commitment involves carrying out numerous environmental protection initiatives, including activities aimed at sustainable water management. For example, in our factory in Albacete, we have a water treatment plant, which treats the water used in the manufacturing processes, leaving it pure, clean and residue-free.

In addition, the residue obtained is recovered. The concentrate from the water treatment process is used as fertiliser, taking advantage of its agricultural value and reducing the amount of waste generated.

Likewise, a high percentage of the water used in different processes in our factories in Albacete and Sanchidrian is reused, maximising the use of this precious natural resource.
